For the female octopus Graneledone boreopacifica, the laying of eggs marks the beginning of the end. She covers them with her body to defend them from predators, constantly fanning them so they have a supply of fresh, oxygenated water. She does this continuously for four years without leaving or eating. When the eggs hatch, she dies, starved and exhausted.
